Action Items of the DREAM Campaign

  PREVIOUS ACTIONS

Fasting for a DREAM: From September 13th to 25th, 2004, immigrant students, friends and family members around the country – some facing deportation – fasted and held vigils to bring attention to the DREAM Act. These actions were taken out of a combination of frustration and hope: frustration that the DREAM Act – which had been poised for passage for months – had not progressed in the 108th Congress, and hope that nonviolent action demonstrating the deep level of commitment to DREAM Act students would stir Congress and the President to act.

Rolling Weeks of Action: Throughout 2004, DREAM supporters organized local actions and generated thousands of calls, emails, and faxes to pressure President Bush, Senate Majority Leader Frist and local elected officials to pass the DREAM Act. For this venture, the country was divided into eight different regions and each region was assigned a specific week to act. During each week, supporters called these targets, and asked them to take a stand and support the DREAM Act.

National Petition Drive: Over a period of six months, DREAM supporters collected tens of thousands of petitions addressed to President Bush. The petitions were signed by friends, neighbors, colleagues, anyone with compassion for the plight of immigrant students.
